Gift Quest Accepted: Shopping for the Hard-to-Please Geek

Why hello again, everybody! We are back with part 2. This time around, I'm going to rant about the particular issue of gift giving and receiving. Now, I don’t know about all of you, but I think that when it comes to shopping for my wife's gift, it is extremely difficult.

I have examples from the past few years. A couple of years back, she was talking about wanting a new vacuum, so I ordered her one for Christmas. It did not get the reaction I hoped at first, needless to say, but she eventually appreciated it... I think.

I have gotten her new tech—i.e., a new computer—and that got around the same reaction as the vacuum, so it left me a little disenchanted, for lack of a better word.

Turns out that although she did wind up enjoying the gifts afterwards, she just thought I was spending too much on them, and in hindsight, I definitely was. It turns out that asking her what she would like never really helps out either, since she always says she doesn't really need anything.

But us husbands all know that's a dangerous statement to hear and follow up with nothing to give come the blessed day. Turns out that she just appreciated a few new sets of comfy PJs, maybe a new holiday blanket, and a quiet night in just the two of us and a good Hallmark movie, sans kids, of course.

Now she, on the other hand, says that I am the hardest person to shop for. Really?

That's because although we have been married for 16 years, we have very different interests, which makes it hard for her to shop for me. I am a nerd or geek, as she would put it, and indeed I am! I myself will be the first to tell you that my interests are anything geek.

I have been watching Anime since I was 16, am an avid fantasy/sci-fi/LitRPG reader/listener as well via Audible, have a small comic book collection. Although I do not have as much time these days, I do try and play some video games, mainly on PS5, and I enjoy playing Dungeons & Dragons or any other board game or card game I can get into.

On every other weekend here in SoCal, you can find me and our sons strolling through Frank & Sons collectible warehouse, either helping our two teenage boys with figure hunting (a hobby I take full responsibility for, by the way!) or buying her a blind box or our youngest boy some Pokémon cards—that place has it all.

Where she loves Hallmark movies and rom-coms or a good love story (don't get me started on how many times I've seen The Notebook), I do enjoy a good love story along the likes of Big Fish or 50 days of summer. My tastes lean more towards Marvel movies, of course, and any other action films, as well as classic fantasy flicks like The Labyrinth and Neverending Story (The Fifth Element is one of my go-to films).

Having said all that, I think shopping for me is pretty self-explanatory, but she says it is anything but easy. So, I am compiling a list here for anybody who is in need of a gift for someone "Nerdy" and you don't know what to get them.
